POINT OF INTEREST

Lido Villa Olmo

Via Per Cernobbio 2, Como, Italy, 22100

Visit Lake Como in peak season, and you’ll have to hunt for a sunbathing and swimming spot. This beach club in the lake’s namesake town is where to find a private beach spot, swim in the lake or pools, and enjoy an aperitivo—all under the watch of Villa Olmo, a beautiful lakeside villa in an area crowded with them.

The basics

Because the beach club lies at the feet of Villa Olmo, you can easily visit after taking tours that include the villa (boat tours cruise by while walking tours sometimes include admission tickets). To visit, you’ll have to pay on-site admission fees (reservations are unavailable)—packages range from daily beach access to monthly and seasonal passes. The use of changing rooms and lockers is extra. Reduced rates are available after 3pm.

Things to know before you go

  • Facilities include pools, a Jacuzzi area, an on-site bar, showers, lockers, and changing rooms.

  • Admission rates vary according to where you’re allowed to hang out: the beach, terrace, or “meadow.”

  • The use of sunbeds, umbrellas, and Jacuzzis is extra.

  • Swimming caps are required for swimming and are available for purchase; children under 3 must wear swim diapers.

  • Pets are not allowed inside the beach club.

  • Guests can receive a stamp for in-and-out privileges.

How to get there

Lido Villa Olmo lies at the feet of Villa Olmo on the southwestern side of Lake Como, about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) north of the Como San Giovanni train station. You can take the local bus lines N1 or N6 to Villa Olmo from there. The walk along the scenic lakeside promenade, which offers beautiful views of Lake Como, usually takes 20–25 minutes.

When to get there

The best time to swim in Lake Como is in the height of summer, from July to August, when the water is warmest. You can get away with swimming in cooler waters in June and September. Lido Villa Olmo is open from morning to evening daily, and swimming in the pool and lake is allowed, starting one hour after opening and ending one hour before closing. Arrive after 3pm for discounted admission.

Where to swim near Como

It’s a challenge to find a place to swim in the crowded town of Como—and while Lido Villa Olmo is a fine option, there are other options. Nearest to Como, Careno Beach is a relatively secluded spot on the way toward Bellagio. Closer to Belaggio, the public beach Spiaggia Pubblica di Bellagio is free to enter. Another option: All along the lakeside roads, you can find public turnoffs with lake access and spaces to sunbathe.
