Things to Know Before You Go

• Self-guided visits don’t have a time limit but must be booked in advance. You can also opt for a guided tour with a garden docent that lasts about three hours.

• Children are welcome but must stay on walking paths; many of the paths are steep and not stroller-friendly.

• The garden is not wheelchair accessible.

How to Get There

Limahuli Garden and Preserve is located in the Limahuli Valley on Kauai’s northern coast. There’s no public transportation to the garden, so visitors must drive or take a taxi wherever they’re coming from. There’s free parking near the entrance, reserved for visitors who have booked a tour in advance.

When to Get There

Many of the paths involve steep climbs uphill, so it’s best to visit during the early and late hours of the day to avoid the worst of the sun and heat. Choose a clear day so you don’t get caught in one of Kauai’s infamous tropical downpours; there’s no shelter inside the garden.

Kauai’s National Tropical Botanical Gardens

Kauai is home to three gardens comprising part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) network, which focus on the study and preservation of native tropical flora in Hawaii and Florida. The other two gardens on the island are both located on the southern coastline: Allerton Garden and McBryde Garden. NTBG’s remaining gardens are on Maui (Kahanu Garden) and in Coconut Grove, Florida (Kampong Garden).
