POINT OF INTEREST

Lipan Point

Grand Canyon National Park, AZ, 86023

Near the east entrance of the Grand Canyon, Lipan Point offers some of the most expansive canyon views, and the longest Colorado River views, on the South Rim. Ideal for sunrise, sunset, and stargazing, it also offers great views of the unique tilted rock strata of the Grand Canyon Supergroup.

The basics

A number of Grand Canyon sightseeing tours, including those from Las Vegas, Flagstaff, and Sedona, include a stop at Lipan Point, along with other South Rim highlights such as the Desert View Watchtower, Moran Point, and Mathers Point. You can also stop here during a drive along the Desert View Road or on the way into or out of the park from the east entrance. Enjoy the sweeping canyon and Colorado River views, and learn about the landscape to enhance your experience.

Things to know before you go

  • Lipan Point is a must-see for photographers, bird watchers, and those interested in geology.

  • It can get quite windy at the overlook, so wear layers.

  • Bring binoculars to better view the geologic formations and look for birds.

How to get there

Lipan Point is located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, and reachable from a spur road off of Desert View Drive, at mile marker 263.5. It’s around 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) from the east entrance of the Grand Canyon. Driving is the easiest way to get there, and a number of Grand Canyon sightseeing tours also stop here.

When to get there

Lipan Point can be visited at any time, and offers great sunrise and sunset views. It’s also an excellent spot for stargazing. Since it can get busy for sunset, plan to arrive early if you want a parking spot. Spring and fall are the best times to visit the Grand Canyon for smaller crowds and good weather.

Tanner Trail

To the east of Lipan Point is the start of the Tanner Trail. One of the most difficult of the developed trails at the Grand Canyon, it descends 4,650 feet (1,417 meters) to the Colorado River, with minimal shade and no water until the river. The trail also meets the Escalante Route and Beamer Trail, two backcountry trails.
