Little India
George Town, Penang, 10450
Little India is the heart of multicultural Penang’s ethnic Indian community. It’s where you can find South Indian-style temples, food, market stalls, and other stores that are quite distinct from those elsewhere. Penang’s Little India doesn’t cover a very large area, but it’s within the UNESCO Penang Heritage Zone of George Town.
The Basics
While it only spreads across three main streets, Little India punches above its relatively small size in terms of interest. It’s home to two of the most significant Indian sites in Penang: the Nagore Darhah Sheriff, the oldest Islamic shrine in the state, and the colorful, multi-tiered Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Penang’s oldest Hindu temple.
Market stalls around the temple burn fragrant incense and sell garlands of flowers. Restaurants serve tasty South Indian platters or, better yet, banana leaf meals. Walking tours, cycle tours, trishaw tours, and food tours are all popular ways of visiting the neighborhood.
Things to Know Before You Go
- The shopping is especially good in Little India: spices, silk clothing (especially saris), and gold jewelry are some of the highlights.
- Bargain when shopping for clothing or other items, but keep the encounter good-natured and respectful.
- If you’re looking for a quick snack rather than a sit-down meal, grab a samosa or a roti Bengali from a pushcart stall.
How to Get There
Though there aren’t firm boundaries around the neighborhood, Little India is centered on Queen Street, Chulia Street, and Market Street. The clan jetties are to the southeast, and Armenian Street to the south. Many people like to walk around Little India and George Town, but the heat (and constant traffic dodging) can get oppressive, so trishaw tours are a good alternative. Hop-on hop-off buses also stop in the area.
When to Get There
Little India is especially lively during Hindu and South Indian festivals, especially Deepavali (October-November), Navaratri (September-October), and Thaipusam (January-February). The temple is most lively at dawn and dusk. Early morning is a cooler, quieter time to stroll through the neighborhood, while the markets and restaurants liven up in the evening.
George Town’s Street Art
George Town is renowned for its street art, which can be found hidden down alleyways and on the sides of restaurants and shops throughout town. A great way to see the art, including murals and wrought-iron sculptures, is just to wander and see what you can find. Guided tours are also offered, and free maps marking the art are available from information counters and hotels.
What kind of food is in Little India Penang?
You’ll find foods like tandoori chicken, naan bread, nasi dalca (a special lentil dish), masala dosas (semolina pancakes) served with spicy coconut chutney, and much more in Little India. Take a foodie tour to get to know some of the secret street vendors and long-established eateries.
What’s the best way to get around Little India Penang?
It’s fun to walk through Little India. You can pause when you like, take photos, ask vendors questions, feel sari fabrics, and smell spices in the market. If you’re in a hurry, hire a trishaw, which is inexpensive and can help you cover more ground.
What is Little India known for?
Little India Penang is known for its temples, mosques, and multiple religious sites. It also has some excellent spots for foodies. Visit the Hindu Sri Mahamariamman Temple, and then try some samosas, masala dosas (pancake with curry), and nasi dalca (lentils and potatoes with chicken).
What can I buy in the Little India Market?
There’s no shortage of things to purchase in Little India's markets. Test your olfactory sense at the spice market, browse jewelry—including gold—at the shops, try on colorful saris for special occasions, and search for religious items, too. Prices are low, so you can buy everyone a souvenir.
What is the history of Little India Penang?
Indians were first brought to Penang by British colonizers as laborers. They worked on plantations and built up the town. As more and more Indian workers arrived, they formed groups to hold onto their culture, retaining their language, religious practices, and traditions. They also held onto their spicy food culture.
What is the best time to visit Little India?
Visit Little India Penang in December or January when the temperature is cooler than at other times, and there’s less rain. However, rainy times of the year are less crowded, which is a draw for many visitors. The weather is warm, no matter when you visit.
