Liverpool Street Station
Liverpool St, London, Engalnd
One of London’s main transport hubs, Liverpool Street Station is the gateway to some of the capital’s top attractions. On one side of the 19th-century station you’ll find the medieval streets and sleek skyscrapers of the City of London. To the other, you’ll stumble into street-art filled Shoreditch. Wherever you plan to visit in London, you’ll likely pass through this Monopoly station at some point.
The basics
As if it wasn’t already busy enough, Liverpool Street Station has seen even more footfall since the Elizabeth line opened in 2022. Visit during peak commuter times and you’ll likely be swept up in a sea of Londoners rushing to work. The station is the starting point for the Stansted Express, which whisks you to Stansted Airport in 45 minutes. You might also pass it on London walking tours, whether focussed on Jack the Ripper, street art, or foodie highlights.
Things to know before you go
Liverpool Street Station is fully wheelchair-accessible. TFL staff members can help if you need assistance boarding a train or using the elevator.
The station has free restrooms with baby changing facilities, ATMs, water fountains, and free public Wi-Fi.
There are a wealth of shops and places to eat, including card and stationery shops, fast food outlets, pubs, and pharmacies.
How to get there
Greater Anglia trains to Essex and Norwich, the London Overground, and the Stansted Express depart from Liverpool Street Station. Below ground on the tube, you can take the Central, Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City, Elizabeth, and Circle lines. There are also Santander cycle racks outside the station, where you can rent bikes.
When to get there
If possible, try to avoid Liverpool Street between peak commute times on weekdays—around 7:30am to 9:30am, then 5:30pm to 7pm—when the station is typically busiest. Travel also costs more during these times. Weekends are usually much quieter.
What to do near Liverpool Street station
You could spend days exploring all the attractions within a 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) radius of Liverpool Street. Head west for around 15 minutes on foot and you’ll find the Barbican, a vast Brutalist building that houses art gallery spaces, a huge greenhouse filled with tropical plants, a theater, cinema, and more. South of the Barbican, you’ll soon reach St. Paul’s Cathedral overlooking the Thames and opposite Tate Modern.
