POINT OF INTEREST

Lloret de Mar

Costa Brava, Spain

One of the top resort destinations on Spain’s Costa Brava, Lloret de Mar offers family-friendly stretches of sandy beach lapped by azure waters perfect for various water sports. The old town—a former fishing village—is home to attractions like the Santa Clotilde Gardens, Modernist cemetery, and Church of Sant Romà within its maze of narrow twisting lanes, plus eateries specialized in Catalonian cuisine.

The basics

Located just about an hour north of Barcelona along Spain’s scenic Costa Brava, Lloret de Mar is a popular day trip from the city. Hop a train to this handsome beach town or join a Costa Brava tour from Barcelona that takes in Lloret de Mar and other coastal hot spots like Tossa de Mar and Sant Feliu De Guíxols. Many day trips also include a boat trip along the coastline to admire the villages by sea.

Things to know before you go

  • Lloret de Mar’s eight beaches are the town’s biggest draw, so spend part of your visit relaxing on the soft sand or taking a dip.
  • The town sits along several scenic coastal trails, ideal for walkers or hikers to explore on foot. The summer heat here is intense, so time any walking for the early morning or late afternoon.
  • Be sure to cover up when leaving the beach to explore the cultural sights in the old town. Locals generally do not wear swimwear when walking in town.
  • There is plenty of sightseeing, dining, and shopping to keep visitors busy before or after their time on the beach.
  • The center of Lloret de Mar is relatively flat and easy to navigate with a wheelchair or stroller; Lloret Beach is wheelchair-accessible.

How to get there

Trains between Barcelona and the nearby town of Blanes depart every 30 minutes and take about 80 minutes; from Blanes, take the Pujol bus for 10 minutes to Lloret de Mar. Alternatively, you can drive from Barcelona in about an hour, either with a rental car or as part of a Costa Brava tour with transportation included.

When to get there

This quintessential beach town is most animated during the summer when the beaches fill with vacationers. Lloret de Mar hosts a series of seasonal events and festivals, such as the Lloret Outdoor Summer Festival and Clon Festival, which run from June through September.

The best beaches in Lloret de Mar

Lloret de Mar has eight beaches lining its coastline, from Canyelles Beach to the east to Treumal Beach to the west. The most accessible is Lloret Beach, just steps from the old town and with the most services, a walking path, and accessible features. The tiny cove of Sa Caletta is particularly charming, set beneath the D’en Plaja Castle, while the rugged rocks of Treumal and Cala Boadella make these beaches among the most picturesque.
