Loschwitz Bridge

Loschwitzer Brücke, Dresden, Saxony, 01326

Officially named the Loschwitz Bridge, the Blue Wonder Bridge in Dresden stretches across the Elbe River. The bridge was painted a bright blue color and earned the nickname it’s known by today. While much of Dresden was destroyed during bombings in World War II, the Blue Wonder Bridge survived.

The basics

The Blue Wonder Bridge dates back to 1893; at the time it was one of the longest bridges built without the support of pillars in the water. This architectural landmark connects the Blasewitz and Loschwitz neighborhoods of Dresden, providing a crossing over the Elbe River for road traffic. Travelers interested in architecture can design private tours to include several top design sites including the Blue Wonder Bridge.

Things to know before you go

  • This truss bridge is a must-see landmark for architecture fans and history lovers.
  • There is a pedestrian walkway that offers great views of the Elbe River; bring your camera.
  • The walkway is separated from traffic but be prepared for traffic noise.

How to get there

Elbbrückenstrasse is the street that crosses the Blue Wonder Bridge, going from Schillerplatz on the west side of the river to Körnerplatz on the east side. The bridge is located near other popular city landmarks including the Dresden TV Tower, the Standseilbahn Dresden funicular railway, and Schwebebahn Dresden suspension railway.

When to get there

For the most peaceful experience, go for a stroll on the pedestrian walkway across the bridge in the early morning or after dusk. During the day, and especially at commuting times, the bridge sees a decent amount of vehicular traffic. The pedestrian walkway will be less crowded on weekdays than on the weekends.

World War II History

The Blue Wonder Bridge was saved by local residents during WWII. Much of Dresden was destroyed during bombings but city residents risked their lives to cut the detonator wires to explosives that were set to destroy the bridge.
