POINT OF INTEREST

Lou Lim Ieoc Garden

10 Estrada de Adolfo Loureiro, Macau, China

Macau’s only Suzhou-style Chinese garden, Lou Lim Ieoc Garden, often attracts locals who come to practice tai chi or play music in what was once the largest private garden in the city. Today the space is a 4.4-acre (1.8-hectare) public park, featuring traditional elements like ponds, bridges, rockeries, pavilions, and pagodas.

The Basics

When visiting Lou Lim Ieoc Garden, you’ll immediately notice the care and intricate design used to construct it. The plan features a residential dwelling with a garden surrounding it. A key architectural feature of Lou Lim Ieoc Garden is the Qingcao Hall, a former residence that once welcomed visiting dignitaries like Sun Yat-Sen. The adjacent Macao Tea Culture House shows exhibits on China’s tea-drinking culture.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The garden offers a tranquil escape from Macau’s crowds.

  • Entrance to the garden is free.

  • Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, and wear comfortable walking shoes.

How to Get There

The easiest way to get to Lou Lim Ieoc Garden is by taking one of several Macau buses (2, 2A, 5, 9, 9A, 12, 16, 22, 25, 25B, 28C, or N2) to the garden entrance.

When to Get There

The garden is open daily throughout the year. Visit first thing in the morning to watch locals practice their daily tai chi, or in the afternoon as an escape from the heat. The pavilion within the garden hosts recitals during the annual International Music Festival in late September and early October.

Nine-Turn Bridge

When visiting the garden, be sure to walk across the elegant 9-turn bridge, which extends across a pond in front of Qingcao Hall. According to local legend, evil spirits can only move in straight lines. The zigzags keep the pavilion safe.
