Maalinup Aboriginal Gallery
10070 W Swan Road, Henley Brook, Perth, Western Australia, 6055
One of the vineyards and cellar door wineries of Perth’s Swan Valley, Maalinup Aboriginal Gallery is both an art gallery and cultural center. Aboriginal-owned and operated, Maalinup pays tribute to the region’s native Wadjuck people and is packed with art and handicrafts designed by local artists and craftsmen, plus Australian herbs, spices, and other specialties.
The basics
Swan Valley is a popular destination for wine-tasting tours from Perth; the Maalinup Aboriginal Gallery makes a fun addition to any itinerary. Stop to admire works by local artists such as Naomi Grant, Deborah Bonar, and Greg Flahey; sample homemade jams, chutneys, and dukkah; and buy traditional handicrafts and one-of-a-kind souvenirs. Maalinup also offers a variety of cultural experiences, including art and handicraft classes, tours of the medicinal plant garden, traditional dance and didgeridoo performances, and bush tucker tasting sessions.
Things to know before you go
Animal lovers take note—Maalinup is also home to several emus who live in the gallery’s garden.
Maalinup is a great choice for families, and kids of all ages will enjoy the entertaining yet informative activities.
It’s free to swing by the gallery and browse the shop, but fees apply for the cultural experiences and classes. Book in advance to avoid disappointment.
How to get there
Maalinup Aboriginal Gallery is on West Swan Road in Henley Brook, close to the banks of the Swan River. It’s easiest to arrive with your own transport or visit as part of a tour, as it’s about a 12-mile (20-kilometer) or 30-minute drive from Perth. There are several free parking spaces out the front.
When to get there
The gallery is open daily from mid-afternoon to late afternoon, year-round, except for Christmas Day and some other public holidays. Guests are welcome to stop by at any time but call ahead to book classes and bush tucker tastings.
Beyond wine tasting: things to do in the Swan Valley
Northeast of Perth, the Swan Valley is best known for its award-winning wineries, but there’s much more to do than wine tasting. Combine your wine-tasting tour with a scenic cruise along the Swan River, rent a bike and cycle around the vineyards, or visit Caversham Wildlife Park. There are plenty of foodie experiences, too—swing by the Margaret River Chocolate Company for a tasting, enjoy a coffee break at Yahava KoffeeWorks, or follow the Swan Valley Distillery Trail.
