Malta at War Museum
Couvre Porte Gate 1, Vittoriosa, 1062
Housed in an old army barracks, the Malta at War Museum focuses on Malta's military history, particularly concerning the Siege of Malta in World War II. Here, you'll find ephemera, displays, and documents on this part of Malta's history.
The basics
While the weapons, documents, medals, and other war-related items make for a fascinating glimpse into the past, one of the more exciting items you can see at the museum is the short propaganda film, Malta G.C., narrated by Sir Laurence Olivier himself. Walking tours of the Birgu area often stop in front of the museum, but if you plan to go inside, you’ll need to buy Malta at War Museum tickets, either in advance or at the door.
Things to know before you go
The Malta at War Museum is a must-visit for history buffs interested in World War II.
Discounted admission for children under 16 and adults 60 and over is available. Tickets for the War H.Q. Tunnel Tours cost extra, with discounted rates for children.
Free audio guides with information in 10 languages are available.
Large backpacks and bags aren't allowed in the museum, but free lockers are available.
The museum is wheelchair-accessible, but parts of the museum are not stroller-friendly.
Food and beverages are available for purchase at the museum's cafe.
How to get there
The Malta at War Museum is located in Birgu, about a 20-minute drive from the heart of Valletta. If you don't have a car, take bus number 2 or 3 from Valletta’s central station. You can also take a ferry from Lascaris Quay in Valletta to Birgu and walk the remaining 10 minutes to the museum.
When to get there
The museum is open Monday–Saturday throughout the year, from mid-morning until late afternoon, and is closed on Sundays and some public holidays. The last admission is half an hour before closing time. Guided War H.Q. Tunnel Tours occur twice daily, once in the morning and once in the afternoon.
The War H.Q. Tunnel Tour
The museum is responsible for maintaining the War H.Q. Tunnels, a network of underground passageways used as air-raid shelters during the war. For many visitors, the chance to tour the museum-run underground tunnels and air-raid shelter is a real treat, and twice-daily guided tours make this desire a reality. Tours don't start at the museum but at the Saluting Battery in Valletta.
