Maputo Central Market

Av. 25 de Setembro, Maputo, Mozambique

Located in the heart of the Mozambican capital, a visit to the Maputo Central Market (Mercado Central de Maputo) offers travelers a slice of local life. Almost always buzzing, the market is filled with vendors selling everything from tropical fruits and vegetables to nuts (don’t miss the cashews), carvings, and capulanas (the traditional cloth used as a sarong-style skirt or baby carrier).

The basics

More than just somewhere to shop, Maputo Central Market is a gathering place for locals and provides a window into local culture. Whether you're here to pick up fresh produce or simply soak up the vibrant atmosphere, a visit to the bustling marketplace is a sensory experience. Housed inside an early-20th-century Portuguese colonial building, the covered market is equally known for its beautiful architecture and is a popular stop on walking tours of Maputo, including those that are focused on the city’s architectural heritage.

Things to know before you go

  • Although some vendors accept credit cards, you should bring plenty of cash.

  • Vendors expect shoppers to haggle, but be respectful and offer a fair price.

  • The market can get very hot: bring water and a fan to stay cool.

  • Keep an eye on your valuables

How to get there

Maputo Central Market is centrally located in downtown Maputo. It is just a 5-minute walk from Maputo station and within walking distance of major hotels and attractions, including the Museu Nacional de Art (National Art Museum). If you’re coming from farther away, you can hop on a chapa (minibus) or grab a taxi.

When to get there

The market is open every day, from early morning until late afternoon—on Sundays it closes in the early afternoon. Early morning is the best time to visit, when the vendors are setting up their stalls and the produce is at its freshest and most plentiful. An early visit is also typically a quieter and cooler experience.

Museu Nacional de Art

After browsing the market, it’s a 10-minute walk to the Museu Nacional de Art. The small museum is home to a permanent collection of around 100 works of art, including pieces by Mozambican artists including the sculptor Alberto Chissano and painters Malangatana Ngwenya, Roberto Chichorro, and Bertina Lopes.
