Market Square Park
301 Milam St., Houston, TX, 77002
Set in central Houston at the site of the city’s founding, Market Square Park is the green, social, and historic heart of downtown. The small but action-packed urban park is popular with picnickers, families, dog owners, and anyone looking for a peaceful spot to reflect in the middle of the city. Bring a book to read beneath the live oak trees, or stroll among outdoor sculptures made by Houston artists.
The Basics
Anchored by a clock tower that dates back to 1904, when it adorned City Hall, Market Square Park is rich in local history and ambiance. Colorful public art is scattered throughout the park’s ample green space, and a dog run draws pet owners and their four-legged friends. Community bike rides and other outdoor events often fill the park with a lively buzz.
Many walking tours of downtown Houston, including cocktail tours, haunted city tours, underground tunnel tours, and self-guided audio tours, feature a stop at Market Square Park and you can also visit the park independently.
Things to Know Before You Go
Don’t forget to bring your camera; the park’s public art collection makes for excellent photo ops.
Visitors are welcome to bring blankets, lawn chairs, food, and non-alcoholic beverages to the park.
The park is well shaded and has plenty of benches for seating.
Market Square Park is accessible for wheelchair users.
How to Get There
Market Square Park is located in downtown Houston, within easy walking distance of many attractions and public parking garages. Parking during weekday business hours can be a challenge, so it’s a good idea to take public transit, a taxi, or a rideshare.
When to Get There
The park is open daily from dawn to dusk, and there’s no admission charge to visit. Go around mealtime to grab a bite at one of the many surrounding restaurants.
Lauren’s Garden
While taking a stroll through Market Square Park, be sure to stop at Lauren’s Garden. This memorial—a stone fountain with seasonal flower displays—is dedicated to the memory of the lives lost on September 11, 2001. The garden is named for Houston native Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas, a passenger on flight United 93, and is a peaceful yet somber piece of more recent history that accompanies the park’s centuries-old Texas heritage.
Ways to explore
Market Square Park is especially lively when community events, everything from holiday festivals to workout classes and summer movie nights, take place on its central lawn. If there’s nothing on the calendar when you visit, you can still enjoy the public art and flowing fountain—then visit the Downtown Aquarium, Sam Houston Park, and other attractions just a short walk away.
