Marmaris Castle & Museum

The basics

Though the current castle dates back to the 1500s, the land is said to have been home to a castle since 3000 BC. A standard admission ticket grants you access to both Marmaris Castle and Marmaris Archeology Museum. The museum has two main sections; the archaeology area showcases glassware, coins, and earthenware excavated from diggings in regions such as Knidos, Burgaz, Hisaronu, while the ethnography lounge exhibits weaving works, carpets, copper kitchen pieces, and weapons from the Ottoman era.

Things to know before you go

• Marmaris Castle is home to the only museum in the city, making it a must-visit for history buffs.
• There is a small admission fee to enter the museum.
• Uneven surfaces and an abundance of stone steps mean that Marmaris Museum is inaccessible to travelers using strollers and wheelchairs.

How to get there

Marmaris Castle & Museum are located on Marmaris Waterfront, on the east side of Marmaris Beach. No public transport services the castle but the landmark is within walking distance of the Old Town.

When to get there

Both the castle and museum are open from the early morning until midway through the afternoon between Tuesday and Sunday. Head to the surrounding ramparts just before dusk to watch the spectacle of sunset in the city.

Exploring the Marmaris Old Town

After browsing the exhibits in Marmaris Castle, be sure to spend some time in the Old Town, which lends itself well to wandering. The historic enclave is characterized by cobbled streets and whitewashed houses, many of which are adorned with flowers and carvings. There’s also an abundance of cafes from which you can enjoy views of the area.
