Mercadillo del Jueves

C. Lepanto 4, Seville, Spain, 41220

Antiques and oddities spill out onto the inner city streets of Seville with the coming of the Mercadillo del Jueves each Thursday. This long-standing flea market is one of the oldest in Europe and sprawls along Calle Feria, enticing passersby with its discordant mix of wares that are just as likely to appeal to nostalgia, curiosity, and novelty as they are good taste.

The basics

Browsing at the Mercadillo del Jueves may take only 10 minutes, since it's a relatively small market, but interested shoppers could spend the better part of an hour here. Afterwards, head to the Mercado de Feria just up the street to check out local food and produce, or continue to roam the old town streets to find landmarks such as the Alameda de Hércules, Palacio de las Dueñas, and the modern Setas de Sevilla.

Things to know before you go

  • The Mercadillo del Jueves is perfect for travelers seeking a unique souvenir.

  • You won’t find food for sale at the market, but there are cafés and restaurants right on the surrounding streets.

  • If you’re driving, don’t try to park near the market; find a parking garage or lot and walk over.

How to get there

You’ll likely stroll to the market, with its location on the north side of Seville's old town, but you can also take the #13 or #14 bus to the Feria (Cruz Verde) stop, just up the street. With the area’s one-way streets, this only works when coming from Plaza del Duque.

When to get there

Since its name means “Thursday Flea Market,” it makes sense that the Mercadillo del Jueves only springs to life each Thursday from morning to mid-afternoon. Since the market is in the historic center of the city, expect it to grow busier and busier as the day goes on. Visit early if you prefer a calmer atmosphere.

Seville markets to visit

Seville loves its markets, and visitors will find a healthy selection of them around the city. The Mercado de Feria is Seville’s oldest market and brims with fresh produce and prepared food, while across the river, the beautiful Mercado de Triana specializes in meat and serves up tapas. For a trendy, modern alternative, head to the Lonja del Barranco for all things gourmet.
