Metekhi Church
Metekhi Street, Tbilisi, GA
Situated on the left bank of the Mtkvari River, Metekhi Church is one of Tbilisi’s key religious landmarks. First built in the 13th century, and located where ancient Georgian ruler Vakhtang I Gorgasali was said to have established Tbilisi in the 5th century, the church is a popular destination among history buffs and religious devotees.
The basics
The ancient, cliff-top Metekhi Church—formally known as the Metekhi Virgin Mary Assumption Church—makes a striking picture: constructed from heavy rock, it almost looks like an elemental part of the landscape itself. The Greek Orthodox landmark has been damaged and rebuilt many times over its long history. Today, it has become a symbol of the city (Tbilisi’s patron saint Abo of Tiflis was said to have been martyred here in the 8th century) and a major tourist destination, and is accompanied by an equestrian statue of King Vakhtang I Gorgasali.
As one of Tbilisi’s highlight attractions, Metekhi Church features on dozens of itineraries. Book a half- or full-day walking tour to get up close and personal with the church and learn about its history—and drop by other Tbilisi highlights like the Narikala Fortress, Sioni Cathedral, and the Bridge of Peace.
Things to know before you go
- For a new perspective on the church, stroll across the nearby Metekhi Bridge—and don’t forget your camera.
- Don’t be afraid to get up close and personal with the landmark: its exterior walls feature delicate carvings and engravings from across its long history.
- Owing to its steep, uneven approach, the church can be difficult to access for visitors in wheelchairs or with limited mobility.
How to get there
The Metekhi Church is located directly overlooking the Mtkvari River in the ancient Metekhi neighborhood. The nearest Tbilisi Metro stop is Avlabari, served by the Akhmeteli–Varketili Line; local bus routes also pass by the church. The landmark can be reached on foot, by bike, and by taxi, and guided tours make transportation even simpler.
When to get there
The Metekhi Church operates typical daytime opening hours, though timings can vary. Note that the church is still home to an active congregation today; be sure to be quiet and respectful if you visit when services are in session.
Tbilisi’s Top Religious Landmarks
The Metekhi Church isn’t the only famous religious landmark worth discovering in Tbilisi. Other highlights include the Sioni Cathedral (an expansive marvel of Georgian medieval architecture), the Holy Trinity Cathedral (the largest cathedral in the country), Anchiskhati Basilica (Tbilisi’s oldest surviving church), the Jumah Mosque (the capital’s only remaining historical mosque), and many more.
