POINT OF INTEREST

Metepenagiag Heritage Park

2156 Micmac Road, Red Bank, NB, NB E9E 2P2

The traditional land of the Mi’kmaq of Metepenagiag stretches along the banks of the Miramichi River. The nation has lived on the land since time immemorial, fishing from the broad river and hunting in the Acadian forests that still cover the region. Today, the park is a place of learning and sharing, where you can hear stories and walk through forest trails.

The basics

At the Metepenagiag Interpretive Centre, you can see Mi’kmaq belongings that date back thousands of years and learn about the nation’s connection to the land. The center displays animal pelts, paintings, and exhibits that teach you about the two nearby national historic sites, where thousands of artifacts were unearthed and returned to the nation. You can also walk with a Mi'kmaw guide through the trails and taste traditional foods, including seasonal fish, summer game, and wild rice.

Things to know before you go

If you’re planning to take a guided tour, book ahead to avoid disappointment on the day. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring bug repellent. Card payments are preferred as the site is moving towards card-only.

How to get there

Metepenagiag Heritage Park is a 3-hour drive from Saint John via the NB-7 N and NB-8 N highways. Located near the community of Red Bank, the park is on the right side of Micmac Road overlooking the river. It’s difficult to reach if you don’t have your own vehicle, but there are plenty of rental car companies in Saint John.

When to get there

In May, the park resumes its high-season hours of operation, so you can visit any day you choose. Spring in New Brunswick sees the land beginning to thaw, and the sun returning, with crisp temperatures and dry days. It’s an ideal time to visit the park, and you can always warm up in the Interpretive Centre.

How to stay overnight at Metepenagiag Heritage Park

For further immersion, book a tipi for the night so you can bed down surrounded by the sounds of nature. Listen to stories around the fire which have been passed down through countless generations, and enjoy a peaceful night in traditional accommodations.
