Metropolitan Cathedral
7-53 Ave. B, Panama City, Panama
Presiding over Cathedral Square (Plaza de la Catedral) in the Old Town (Casco Viejo), the Metropolitan Cathedral is one of Panama City’s most significant religious buildings and a striking landmark. Constructed between 1688 and 1796, the cathedral’s conglomeration of neoclassical, baroque, and Renaissance architectural styles has been painstakingly restored in recent years and remains a working church.
The basics
Walking tours of Panama City’s old quarter, the Casco Viejo, all include a look at the Metropolitan Cathedral—and it’s worth visiting with a guide to learn more about its fascinating history. Admire the architectural highlights, including the dark stone façade flanked by a pair of white bell towers, the high ceiling supported by 67 columns, and its exquisite stained-glass windows. Hear how the cathedral has witnessed key events in Panama’s history, such as the 1903 declaration of the Republic of Panama, which took place on the plaza in front of the church.

A walking tour of the Casco Viejo
The Casco Viejo (also known as the Casco Antiguo) is Panama City’s oldest district and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dating back to the late 17th century, the atmospheric quarter is renowned for its colorfully painted buildings, brick-paved streets, and rich architecture. After peeking inside the Metropolitan Cathedral, visit such as the Church of San Jose (Iglesia de San José) with its golden altar, the National Theatre of Panama (Teatro Nacional de Panamá), and the Flat Arch (Arco Chato).
