Michael’s Tower
Michalská ulica 22, Bratislava, Slovakia, 81103
A 14th-century gate for Bratislava’s city walls, Michael’s Tower is the last remaining of the original four, with additional construction increasing its height until the 18th century. The gate is a landmark of Bratislaval’s Old Town, and today is a popular tourist attraction.
The basics
If you’re looking for the nearby church that gave Michael’s Tower its name, you won’t find it. The church devoted to St. Michael, which once stood at the tower’s base, was one of the many medieval buildings destroyed in the 16th century. You can visit the top of Michael’s Tower and look out over the city; apart from the panoramic view, you’ll also see a golden statue of the Archangel Michael, where a time capsule was placed in 1758.
Things to know before you go
Steep steps on the first level and narrow walkways at the tower’s top may be difficult for some visitors to access.
You can purchase tickets at the Pharmacy at the Red Crab at Michalská 28.
A small museum of weapons is also at the top.
How to get there
Michael’s Tower (or Michalská brána) is located in Bratislava’s Old Town at Michalská ulica 22 806/24; the easiest way to get there is by walking from the marina. The closest tram stop, Kapucínska, is on the #9 line. If you’re coming from the train station, you can walk to the #1 tram line and get off at Postova.
When to get there
Michael’s Tower sees the most crowds during the summer and on the weekends. It’s best to get there as early as possible, or pair your visit with breakfast or an early lunch by the base of the tower.
Find more tower viewpoints
For some of the best views of the city, head to two more landmarks. The UFO Tower, which looks like a spaceship, stands at the south end of the Most SNP bridge and offers views across the Danube. The Kamzik TV Tower is north of the city; you can follow the trails through the forest and take a free elevator to the top.
