Towering 50 storys above downtown Bogotá, the Colpatria Tower (Torre Colpatria) was once the tallest building in Colombia and remains a key Bogotá landmark. Now clocking in at fourth tallest in the country, each night visitors can admire the impressive LED light show or ascend to the 49th floor observation deck for 360-degree views over the capital on select days.
The Basics
Completed in 1979, the Torre Colpatria is a staple of the Bogotá skyline and can be admired both independently and as part of most guided city tours which pass through the downtown area. It’s also worth stopping by for the free evening light show.
However, the real appeal lies on the 49th floor. From there, visitors can appreciate the scale of Bogotá while also taking impressive photos of the Colombian capital. Things to Know Before You Go
- First-time visitors to Bogotá won’t want to miss the views from Torre Colpatria’s observation deck.
- It can get windy and chilly on the observation deck—wear a jacket or sweater.
- Arrive early if you want to catch the sunset from the 49th floor.
- Each December the Torre Colpatria hosts the Carrera de Ascenso, during which participants compete to run up 48 flights of stairs the fastest.
- Torre Colpatria’s observation deck is not wheelchair or stroller accessible.
How to Get There
Torre Colpatria is conveniently situated at the heart of the Bogotá downtown, on the corner of 26th Street and 7th Avenue, making it easily accessible on foot or by public transport. The closest TransMilenio station is San Diego, although Museo Nacional is also nearby.
When to Get There
The Torre Colpatria’s viewing deck is open on Fridays from 6pm to 9pm, on Saturdays from 2pm to 8pm, and on Sundays and holidays from 11am to 5pm. If you want to enjoy a Colombian sunset, try to visit on a Friday or Saturday but arrive early to guarantee admission. Torre Colpatria’s LED light show is held each evening from 6pm to 11pm.
Things to do in Downtown Bogotá
Most travelers spend around an hour admiring the views from the Torre Colpatria lookout, so there’s plenty of time to see what else the downtown has to offer. Those with kids may wish to visit the nearby Planetarium. Meanwhile, on Sundays you can visit the San Alejo Flea Market, before refueling with onces santafereñas (a hot drink plus bread, cake, and/or cheese) at the nearby Pastelería La Florida.
