Monkey Beach
Amphoe Mueang Krabi, Krabi, Thailand, 81000
A strip of bone-white sand lapped by the Andaman Sea and backed by limestone cliffs, Monkey Beach is an unspoiled slice of paradise. Or at least its residents think so—hundreds of long-tailed macaques call this place home. The turquoise waters surrounding it are also among the top snorkel spots in the Phi Phi islands.
The basics
Monkey Beach is a firm fixture of island-hopping tours around the Phi Phi Islands, which typically depart from Phi Phi Don or Phuket. Excursions transport you by traditional long-tail boat or speedboat, and tend to combine a short stop at Monkey Beach with Maya Bay, famous for its role in the Hollywood blockbuster The Beach; Viking Cave, home to hundreds of swallows and their nests; and Pileh Bay, where you stop to snorkel in emerald waters full of tropical fish.
Things to know before you go
Exercise caution around the monkeys; they’re wild animals and bites and scratches happen.
Don’t take any food or water onto the beach, as the monkeys are sure to take it from you.
There are no bathrooms or other amenities on Monkey Beach.
How to get there
The only way to reach Monkey Beach is by boat. Long-tail and speedboats depart regularly from Tonsai Jetty on Phi Phi Don, the largest and most developed on the Phi Phi Islands. Island-hopping tours are the easiest way to go, but you can also rent a sea kayak and paddle there yourself—it takes around 40 minutes. Make sure to take ample water and sun protection.
When to get there
To see the highest concentration of monkeys, head to Monkey Beach from mid-afternoon when the limestone cliffs shade the beach; the monkeys prefer these cooler temperatures. The best time to visit the Phi Phi Islands is during the dry season from November to April.
How to stay safe around the monkeys
While the long-tailed macaques are wild animals, they’re not naturally aggressive. Follow these rules for a safe and enjoyable time around them: Don’t make direct eye contact with the monkeys, as they interpret this as a sign of aggression. If a monkey jumps on you, do not panic or start running, as this will agitate them. Secure loose items such as sunglasses and jewelry.
