POINT OF INTEREST

Mono Lake

California, CA

Mono Lake, in the northern section of California’s Eastern Sierra region, is an ancient saline lake known for its otherworldly “tufa towers” (which are calcium-carbonate spires) and rich ecosystem. Visitors come to explore its unusual landscapes, kayak on its calm waters, and observe diverse bird species. Its striking scenery and ecological importance make it a popular destination for nature lovers and photographers.

The basics

Mono Lake offers visitors a variety of outdoor activities, including kayaking, hiking, and swimming (or simply floating on the salt-dense water). See the unique formations at South Tufa, or hike the relatively flat Mono Lake Trail to take in stunning views. Bird-watchers can also observe the migratory species that flock to the lake. You’ll find maps and information on guided tours at the visitor center, and the self-guided nature trail at South Tufa has interpretative signage. Some multi-day excursions to Yosemite also include a stop at Mono Lake.

Things to know before you go

  • Dogs are allowed in most areas, except for the State Reserve Boardwalk and the County Park.

  • Most parts of the trails are accessible for people with limited mobility.

  • Head to the interpretive trail in South Tufa if you have limited time.

How to get there

Mono Lake is east of Yosemite National Park, near the town of Lee Vining, which is about 5 hours by car from both Los Angeles and San Francisco. Driving is the best way to get there, and you’ll travel along US Highway 395 to reach the lake. Some guided tours of Yosemite include a stop at Mono Lake and provide round-trip transportation.

When to get there

The best time to visit Mono Lake is between late spring and early fall (May to October). During these months, the temperatures are mild and the lake's water levels are ideal for kayaking and bird-watching. There are fewer crowds in the winter, as well as opportunities to cross-country ski, but access may be limited due to snow.

Birds to spot at Mono Lake

Because Mono Lake is an important stopover for many migratory birds, bird-watchers flock to this California destination. Here, you can spot a variety of species, especially during migration seasons. Common sightings include California gulls, which nest in large colonies on the lake's islands; eared grebes; ospreys; American avocets; and Wilson’s phalaropes.
