Monte Brè
Lugano, Switzerland, 6979
A favorite of Lugano locals and visitors alike, Monte Brè is a popular day-trip and summertime sunset spot. Most people avoid the narrow mountain road to its summit, and take the far-more-fun funicular instead. This two-stage route passes from Cassarate to Suvigliana to Monte Brè, where there are a couple of restaurants and a church, plus trails for hiking, biking, and soaking up the views.
The basics
A trip to Monte Brè can be done independently, but since the funicular base station is outside of Lugano center, it’s convenient to go as part of a guided day trip—plus you’ll learn about the Ticino region along the way. Some options for additional activities include cruises across Lake Lugano to Cassarate, walks around Brè village, and onward hikes from Monte Brè’s summit to Monte Boglia.
Many visitors simply buy a one-way funicular ticket up, and then walk back to either Brè or Gandria; you can then catch a bus back to Lugano or walk back via the Olive Trail.
Things to know before you go
- The summit of Monte Brè isn’t super high, at an altitude of 3,035 feet (925 meters), but it’s a good idea to dress in layers and take a waterproof layer.
- The best views are from the terrace of Ristorante Vetta. Book in advance for the busy summer weekends.
- The Ticino Card (given free to most Lugano hotel guests), HolidayCard Lugano, and Welcome Card Mendrisio each include a discount on the funicular fare.
- The funicular isn’t suitable for wheelchairs, but there is a dedicated shuttle service available for wheelchair users that can be booked 24 hours in advance.
How to get there
From Lugano station, take a 10-minute bus ride to Cassarate, where you’ll find the funicular base station. From here, take the funicular to Suvigliana; this ride only takes a few minutes. At this mid-station, cross the street to then take the second stage of the funicular up to Monte Brè, which takes around 10 minutes.
When to get there
The hours for both funiculars vary seasonally, and it’s a good idea to check the timetables online before you go. Both operate year-round, with the exception of a maintenance period from early January to mid-February, and a holiday break on December 25. The funiculars also close in bad weather, so if it’s looking particularly windy, call to check before you depart for Cassarate. Also, keep in mind that the views won’t be anything special if there’s rain, mist, or a thick summer haze.
The art trail in Brè
If you’re interested in art, you can follow an unofficial art trail around the village of Brè from the square by the medieval church Chiesa dei Santi Simone e Fedele. Wall murals, sculptures, and other gems by local artists are all en route. You can also pair this short walk with a visit to Brè’s Wilhelm Schmid Museum, which displays the artist’s paintings in his former home.
