Montserrat Monastery
Montserrat, Barcelona, Catalonia, 08199
Perched high in the Montserrat range, the Montserrat Monastery (Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey) is one of Catalonia’s most spiritual attractions, surrounded by natural beauty. Pilgrims and Barcelona day-trippers alike come here for its sacred shrine, the famed “La Moreneta,” and for the sweeping views of the jagged rock formations and valleys below. This ubiquitous appeal makes it a standout stop on any Spain itinerary.
Ways to explore
Visiting the abbey usually means choosing between self-guided access or a guided tour from nearby cities. Many tours include transport plus entry, while others bundle in extra perks, such as audio guides or skip-the-line access. Ticketed options often cover access to the basilica and its shrine, museum visits, funicular or cable car rides, and free time to explore the mountain paths or the monastery grounds. Book a horseback riding tour or add on lunch at a nearby winery for an extra special experience.
