POINT OF INTEREST

Morretes

Morretes, Paraná, 83350-000

A pretty colonial town that dates to the Brazilian Gold Rush, Morretes is a popular day-trip destination from nearby Curitiba. Located on the Nhundiaquara River and framed by the dramatic peaks of Pico do Marumbi State Park, Morretes boasts a lively historic center. Its main attraction, however, is the historic Serra Verde Express train, which links it to Curitiba.

The basics

Scenic and sedate Morretes has long been a popular escape from the bustle and activity of Curitiba, offering a glimpse of how Brazil looked centuries ago. Most visitors depart early in the morning via the Serra Verde Express. One of the country’s most storied railroads, it wends through the verdant scenery of Paraná’s Atlantic Forest, offering up-close views of some of southern Brazil’s most extraordinary landscapes.

Upon arrival, visitors can take a sightseeing tour of Morretes’ historic homes and centuries-old churches, sample local drinks and delicacies, or visit attractions like Ekôa Park. The ecological park offers recreational activities like ziplining. To make logistics seamless, book your transit in advance of your visit.

Things to know before you go

  • Don’t miss the chance to try Morretes’ signature dish: barreado, a slowly braised stew served with rice, farofa, and banana.

  • The Serra Verde Express offers four classes, from basic fare to luxury accommodation, with onboard food and drinks.

  • Sit on the left-hand side of the Serra Verde Express when leaving Curitiba for the best views of the scenery.

  • Cachaça has been distilled in Morretes for centuries—take part in a tasting or bring different bottles and flavors home as souvenirs.

How to get there

Morretes is located roughly 43 miles (67 kilometers) east of Curitiba. If traveling by car, take BR-277; the journey takes approximately 1 hour. The Serra Verde Express is the most popular way to visit, and the train takes between three to four hours each way. Many travelers take the train to Morretes and then travel back by coach, both of which can be reserved in advance.

When to get there

Morretes is a popular destination throughout the year. For minimal disruption and maximum comfort, avoid the rainy season, which peaks in summer from December–February. Rain can cause occasional disruptive flooding and mudslides in the region.

Antonina and Paranaguá

In addition to Morretes, several other nearby historical towns are popular among Curitiba day-trippers. Antonina, another colonial town, offers a wealth of heritage architecture. Paranaguá Paraná’s oldest city provides beautiful seafront vistas.
