Mt. Norquay Ski Resort
2 Mount Norquay Road, Banff, AB, AB T1L 1B4
Inside Banff National Park, Mt. Norquay is the smallest of the area’s three ski resorts, but it still packs a Banff-shaped punch. What this former Olympic and World Cup training ground lacks in vertical runs, it makes up for with the only night skiing in Banff, a fully lit terrain park, snow tubing, and a ski school.
The basics
Opened in 1926, Mt. Norquay is the closest ski spot to the town of Banff—about a 10-minute drive away. Though it’s just 5 percent the size of nearby Lake Louise Ski Resort, it offers 60 runs totaling 10.2 miles (16.4 kilometers) with a vertical drop of 1,650 feet (503 meters). There is a ski school for beginners, while the North American double chair brings skiers to some of the continent's most challenging terrain.
Things to know before you go
If you need a ride, the resort offers several pick-up spots in the town of Banff (no reservations required).
Look for deals and discount packages on the resort’s website.
If you’re visiting in summer, don’t miss the resort’s via ferrata route—it’s the only one in the park.
How to get there
If you’re already in Banff National Park, you’re 99 percent of the way there. Just head west from Banff town on the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1). Take the exit for Norquay Road and follow signs to the resort—it’s about 10 minutes from town. If you don’t have your own wheels, hop on a shuttle from the town of Banff.
When to get there
Mt. Norquay’s ski season typically runs from early November to late April—be sure to check current conditions on the website. If you’re looking for night skiing, it’s only offered on Friday and Saturday nights starting in January. And, of course, if you’re looking for snow-free terrain, that’s found June–September.
When temperatures rise
There’s plenty to do at Mt. Norquay in summer, too. Ride the North American chairlift (the “Big Chair”) to nearly 7,000 feet (2,085 meters) for a spectacular view of the national park, no hiking required. Grab a bite at the Cliffhouse to lengthen your aerial visit, or hit up one of the resort’s via ferrata climbing routes.
