Muiden Castle (Muiderslot)
1 Herengracht, Muiden, Netherlands
Muiden Castle, or Muiderslot, is one of the better-preserved medieval castles in the Netherlands. Built in 1370 about 10 miles (15 kilometers) south of Amsterdam, this square fortress comes straight out of a video game, with classic elements like towers, battlements, and a moat. It now serves as a national museum showcasing period rooms, armor collections, and beautiful gardens designed in 17th-century style.
The basics
Muiden Castle has had quite the turbulent history across the past 700 years—at one time, it was even set to be demolished. In 1878, it became one of the Netherlands’ first national museums, with collections dating all the way back to the Middle Ages. In the modern era, it’s been showcased in films and TV series, largely thanks to its classic, well-preserved structure. Leisurely (and free) audio tours are the best way to explore, from the maze-like gardens to dramatic rooms like the art-filled, black-and-white Knights’ Hall.
Things to know before you go
The castle is not wheelchair accessible, but the grounds are, and visiting them is free of charge for wheelchair users.
An audio tour is included in the entrance fee—it’s available in 10 languages.
For visitors with the I Amsterdam card/Go City Pass Amsterdam, admission is free.
How to get there
There are several ways to reach Muiden Castle. Take the train from Amsterdam or Utrecht Central Station to Weesp; from there, hop on bus 110 to Muiden Centrum and make the 10-minute walk to the castle. You can also hop on a ferry in Amsterdam directly to the castle in the summer, bike the entire way there, or simply drive—the nearest free parking lot is about a 15-minute walk.
When to get there
From April to October, Muiden Castle is typically open every day from morning to the start of the evening, including holidays. In the winter, it’s open every day except Mondays. If you’re looking forward to strolling the 17th-century gardens, May–August is the best time to see the vibrant blooms.
In royal style
To make a day of exploring the Netherlands’ best castles—and to do it in VIP style—book a private tour. You’ll be picked up from your hotel in Amsterdam and whisked off into the past, where kings and queens, knights and poets each held their reign. (Seriously—poet P.C. Hooft was Muiden Castle’s proprietor in the 17th century.)
