Mundenhof
Mundenhof 37, Freiburg, Germany, 79111
A top pick for a family day out, Mundenhof near Freiburg offers a winning combination of well-cared-for creatures, ample space for both animals and kids, and free admission. With large enclosures for mostly domestic and farm animals, the site feels more like a wildlife park than a zoo, though meerkats, monkeys, and a large aquarium add excitement to the atmosphere.
The basics
The site extends over 94 acres (38 hectares), making it the largest animal habitat in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. In addition to its animal paddocks and enclosures, the park also boasts two large playgrounds, picnic areas, an aquarium, and a farm restaurant.
Since the park is a 30-minute drive from Freiburg im Breisgau, it’s somewhat off the main tourist track. However, it’s easy to access by public transportation or car, and works well for a spontaneous visit.
Things to know before you go
Admission is free, but you can contribute to the zoo’s upkeep by donating, using the paid parking lot, or buying food on-site.
Bring cash to pay for parking.
There is limited shade at the zoo; on hot days, bring a sun hat and sunscreen.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, and consider bringing bikes or strollers for the kids.
How to get there
If you’re not driving, you can cycle from Freiburg on the Dreisam River bike path to the Lehen Bridge, from where Mundenhof is signposted. By public transit, you can take the infrequent #19 bus directly to Mundenhof, or the more frequent tram services, taking #1 to Padua-Allee or #5 to Bollerstaudenweg. Note, the trams leave you with a 30-minute walk from Mundenhof; if you want to spare your legs, take a taxi instead.
When to get there
The park is open year-round. Between March and October, when the weather is generally mild, you can accompany the zookeepers on feedings that take place around lunchtime. Note, there aren’t many covered areas at the zoo, so it doesn’t work so well on rainy days.
KonTiKi at Mundenhof
If your kids want a more hands-on experience with the animals, make your way to the KonTiKi petting zoo inside the park. On select weekdays during the school year, the popular Kontiki afternoons take place, when Mundenhof staff show younger visitors how to handle the animals and care for the resident horses, donkeys, alpacas, and goats.
