POINT OF INTEREST

Museo de Historia Natural

Av. de los Compositores, Mexico City, Mexico, 11100

Spanning more than 80,730 square feet (7,500 square meters), the Museo de Historia Natural in Mexico City is housed within a series of colorful dome structures, which showcase more than 2,500 specimens. It’s a must-visit museum for anthropology buffs and a fun and educational experience for kids, too.

The basics

Artifacts within the Museo de Historia Natural are arranged across areas divided into themes: Evolution of Life, Biological Diversity, Mega-Diverse Mexico, Biogeography, and the Insect Collection. Highlights include dinosaur skeletons, a wide range of fossils, and interactive exhibits designed to keep kids engaged. From Wednesday through Friday, the museum offers tours for an extra charge led by guides; tours can accommodate no more than 30 people and are on a first-come, first-served basis. You might pass by the museum on bike or walking tours of Chapultepec Park, or you can book private museum tours.

Things to know before you go

  • All of the signage in the museum is in Spanish, so it’s worth downloading a good translation app.

  • There’s an admission fee to enter the museum; children and seniors get a discount.

  • The Museo de Historia Natural offers virtual sessions that let you learn more about natural history without leaving the house.

  • The museum is wheelchair-accessible and offers free wheelchair loans.

How to get there

Museo de Historia Natural is inside Chapultepec Park (Bosque de Chapultepec), one of the world’s largest city parks. It’s a short walk from the Panteón Dolores gondola lift station, while the nearest metro stations are Constituyentes or Observatorio—both are around a 20-minute walk away. Numerous bus routes serve the area surrounding the park.

When to get there

Museo de Historia Natural is open from Tuesday through Sunday from mid-morning until early evening. It’s closed on Mondays and the final ticket sales are 30 minutes before closing. Guided tours take place on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

The highlights of Chapultepec Park (Bosque de Chapultepec)

Thanks to its prime location in Chapultepec Park, the Museo de Historia Natural is close to many other top CDMX attractions. A must-visit is the opulent Chapultepec Castle (Castillo de Chapultepec), a former royal residence that now houses the National Museum of History (Museo Nacional de Historia), which explores the capital’s storied past.
