Museo Sa Bassa Blanca
Camino del Collbaix, Alcudia, Spain, 07400
Nestled among the pine trees of northern Mallorca’s rugged coast, Museo Sa Bassa Blanca integrates art and culture with nature. Exhibits are artfully scattered across indoor galleries and outdoor gardens, and feature pieces ranging from 16th-century portraits to contemporary artworks and a “Zoological Park” sculpture garden featuring huge animals in the style of archeological excavations.
The basics
One of the main highlights of Museo Sa Bassa Blanca is the architecture of the turreted, bone-white Hassan Fathy House, inspired by Andalucian and Moroccan designs, and home to most of the artwork. An admission ticket to the house includes a 1-hour guided tour of the building—it’s worth booking this in advance, as capacity is limited. You can also buy separate tickets for the outdoor spaces or a complete ticket that covers everything.
Things to know before you go
Most of the museum and facilities are wheelchair accessible and there are accessible bathrooms.
Free Wi-Fi and a gift shop selling artistic souvenirs are at the museum.
The museum is home to an artfully decorated restaurant and café, serving coffee, alcoholic drinks, and seasonal dishes.
How to get there
Museo Sa Bassa Blanca is a 20-minute drive from the tourist hub of Alcudia. Because of the rough and bumpy roads leading to the remote museum, it can sometimes be difficult to get a taxi to and from, so it’s best to rent your own car, visit on a tour, or arrange your taxi ride back in advance.
When to get there
Museo Sa Bassa Blanca is open Wednesday–Saturday from morning to early evening, and Sunday from morning to mid-afternoon; it’s closed Mondays and Tuesdays. The restaurant, Café La Paloma, keeps the same hours, and you can make a reservation by phone or email. On Thursdays between 4pm and 5:30pm, you can visit the NINS portrait exhibition and Artesonado free of charge, as long as there’s room; reserve your spot in advance and arrive early.
More must-sees at MSBB
The cultural delights of Museo Sa Bassa Blanca don’t stop at art and sculpture. The complex is also home to an olive grove, where you can wander among 22 centuries-old trees, and an observatory, where you can look through a camera obscura and admire sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea.
