Amsterdam’s Museum Het Schip is dedicated to the early 20th century Amsterdam School style of architecture. Located inside the Het Schip–a massive social housing project designed by Michel de Klerk that resembles the outline of a ship–the Museum tells the history of the building through the social and political context that led to its need.

The museum offers daily tours of the Het Schip, including extended tours of housing projects designed by Michel de Klerk and his colleagues. Visitors can hop on a guided tour or explore the building grounds, former post office, and museum on a self-guided tour. Admission to Het Schip is free with the I amsterdam City Card, which also provides free entry to many of Amsterdam’s top attractions and free unlimited public transportation throughout the city.

How to get there
The Museum Het Schip is found in the iconic apartment building of the same name in the Spaarndammerbuurt district of Amsterdam. To get there, take bus 22 from Amsterdam Central Station to the Spaarndammerbuurt stop. The museum is also easily accessible by car, foot, or bike from central Amsterdam.
When to get there
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from late morning to early evening, and closed on major Dutch holidays. A guided tour is offered every hour on the hour, and the mid-afternoon tour is always in English. The museum is busiest on the weekends and mid-day, so go during the week or visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
The Amsterdam School Style of Architecture
The Amsterdam School of Architecture arose during the early 1900s and is characterized by elaborate masonry and wrought iron elements with decorative windows, towers, and ornamental spires. Born from the need for better housing for Amsterdam’s working class, the Amsterdam School was the chosen style for public housing projects and local institutions in the 1920s and 1930s.
