Museum Kampa
U Sovových Mlýnů 2, Prague, Czech Republic, 118 00
Museum Kampa is one of Prague’s top museums and exhibits contemporary European art in the whitewashed medieval Sova Mill on Kampa Island. In addition to the permanent collection of works by artists like Cubist sculptor Otto Gutfreund and abstract artist František Kupka, the museum holds world-class temporary exhibitions.
The basics
Make a detour before or after your old town walking tour to stop on charming Kampa Island to see the private collections—now donated to the Czech Republic—of art connoisseurs Jan and Meda Mládek.
First admire the museum’s setting, the 14th-century Sova Mill, converted and reworked into a two-story, neo-Gothic mansion in the 19th century and again to create the museum in 2003. Art aficionados won’t want to miss the world’s largest collection of works by František Kupka, a founder of modern abstract painting, as well as works by other 20th-century Eastern bloc artists not widely displayed elsewhere. Before leaving, make your way to the glass rooftop terrace for a spectacular view of Prague Castle and Charles Bridge.
Things to know before you go
Temporary exhibitions take place throughout the year, including often whimsical open-air installations on the surrounding grounds.
General admission tickets include both the permanent collection and special exhibitions, but you can buy separate tickets for each.
Photography is not allowed inside the museum.
The Museum Kampa offers guided tours and workshops for families with children, which must be booked in advance through the museum website.
The galleries are accessible to wheelchairs; some areas of the museum are not accessible to strollers.
How to get there
Museum Kampa is set on Kampa Island in Prague’s Lesser Quarter (Mala Strana), an easy walk from the Charles Bridge through the tree-lined Na Kampě square or from other top sights. To reach the island from other parts of the city, take one of the many trams or buses that stop at the main square, Malostranské náměstí.
When to get there
Visit on a clear day to take advantage of Museum Kampa’s rooftop terrace, which affords picture-perfect views over the river and city. Snap your own photos of the cityscape, as well as enjoy the art indoors with the best light possible. The museum is open daily, ideal for a Monday outing when many other attractions are closed.
Visiting Prague’s Kampa Island
One of the most charming spots in Prague’s historic center, Kampa Island sits between the main Vltava riverway and the Čertovka, a secondary canal known as the Devil’s Canal. A short walk from the Mala Strana, this quiet island offers a respite from tourist crowds with its leafy riverfront park and scenic squares, plus sights like the Kampa Museum, Grand Priory Mill, and Lennon Wall.
