The story of the Czech Republic’s (then Czechoslovakia days behind the Iron Curtain are explored at the Museum of Communism (Muzeum Komunismu in Prague. Through photos, political posters, medals, original busts of such figures as Lenin and Marx, Soviet uniforms, and old movie reels, the displays deal with how local people lived their daily lives under the Communist regime.
The basics
Displays show the anti-capitalist propaganda that was used during the Communist era, as well as how people dealt with the threat of Cold War warfare. Visitors also learn about work conditions in Soviet factories and can view a mock-up of an interrogation room and rare film footage of the 1962 destruction of the Stalin Monument in Letná Park. The exhibition ends on a positive note, with a video showing events that led to the (largely) peaceful Velvet Revolution and the re-establishment of democracy under Václav Havel.

*The Museum of Communism is a must-visit for anyone interested in Czech and Soviet history. *There is a gift shop on site where you can buy related books and reproductions of artifacts. *Visitors have to climb a flight of stairs which makes access difficult for wheelchair users.
How to get there
The museum is located in the center of Prague within easy walking distance of many major hotels and attractions, such as the Mucha Museum. If using the Prague Metro, take line A or B to Můstek, which is less than a 10-minute walk away.
When to get there
The Museum of Communism is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Give yourself around one hour to explore the museum and watch the documentary film “A Time of Shame, Silence, and Hope,” which plays in the on-site cinema.
Nuclear Bunker Museum
Those wishing to dive deeper into Prague’s Communist-era history can visit the Nuclear Bunker Museum near Olšanské Náměstí, where a collection of Cold War-era artifacts are collected in a bunker, and the Memorial to the Victims of Communism, a series of bronze statues which stand at the base of Petřín Hill on the west bank of the River Vltava.
