Museum Speelklok
Steenweg 6, Utrecht, Netherlands, 3511
Antique self-playing instruments—with a history dating back centuries—fill the Museum Speelklok and provide its musical ambiance. This niche museum in central Utrecht celebrates the Dutch tradition of music boxes, musical clocks, and street organs, including the famous painted street organ, the “Arabier.” Learning about these intricate instruments and hearing their cheerful tunes is an experience designed for the whole family.
The basics
Visitors to the Museum Speelklok can choose to see the exhibits on their own or join the 45-minute guided tours that start on the half hour. Besides learning about the collection from the guide, the tour lets you see how the instruments are operated and hear them play.
Since the Museum Speelklok is in the heart of the city, there are many ways to follow up your visit, from a boat ride through Utrecht’s canals to sightseeing at the various attractions around the Domplein square.
Things to know before you go
You can purchase a combined ticket that also includes entry to the Dom Tower or a canal boat ride.
The museum has a café that serves drinks and lunch.
Though the entire building is wheelchair accessible, some doors are quite heavy and are easier to manage with assistance.
Wheelchairs and folding stools are available for loan from the museum.
How to get there
The Museum Speelklok is west of the Oudegracht canal in Utrecht’s old town, and walking and cycling are the easiest ways to reach it. Taking public transportation won’t be that useful in most cases, but the best option is to take the #2 bus to the Domplein bus stop, a 5-minute walk from the museum.
When to get there
The Museum Speelklok is open every day except Mondays during regular business hours, but also opens on Mondays during official school holidays. Try to visit on a weekday or early in the morning to catch the museum at its quietest.
Niche museums of Utrecht
Utrecht as a city isn’t afraid to honor its local culture, no matter how particular or unusual the subject may be. Take, for example, the Nijntje Museum, dedicated to the beloved children’s fictional character Miffy, who was created in Utrecht by Dutch artist Dick Bruna. The city is also home to the Volksbuurtmuseum, dedicated to working-class families, and The Railway Museum, inside one of Utrecht’s old stations.
