Namjatown

The Basics

One of Tokyo’s quirkier indoor theme parks, Namjatown is full of surprises. There are games, but more unique is the gyoza-themed village, Gyoza Stadium, where you can sample any of the 100 types of gyoza available, and a street dedicated to desserts with 50 ice cream flavors available. Prebook your ticket for guaranteed admission and access to the park’s three “towns,” Fukubukuro, Mononoke, and Dokkingham Plaza, each with their own rides and food.

How to Get There

Namjatown is an 8-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station, which is on the JR, Tobu Tojo Line, Seibu Ikebukuro Line, and Tokyo Metro’s Yurakucho, Marunouchi, and Fukutoshin lines. It’s a 3-minute walk from Higashi-ikebukuro Station on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line and a 4-minute walk from Higashi-ikebukuro 4-chome Station on the Toden Arakawa Line.

When to Get There

The park is open daily from morning until late evening. The last entrance is one hour before close and food and drink spots don't take orders 30 minutes before close. Namjatown is at its busiest on weekends and school holidays.

Sunshine City

Opened in 1978, Sunshine City is Tokyo's first “city within the city,” a popular type of urban development in Japan; other examples include Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown. The complex contains shops and restaurants, an aquarium, planetarium, museum, hotel, and offices, as well as Namjatown. Adjoining the complex is the 786-foot (240-meter) Sunshine 60 skyscraper, which was the tallest building in Asia from 1978 until 1985—there is an observation deck on the 60th floor.
