The Basics

The layout of Nan Lian Garden was meticulously planned and every rock, plant, waterfall, pond, and structure was placed according to strict rules of garden design. Highlights include the Golden Pavilion of Absolute Perfection, the red arched Zi Wu Bridges, Blue Pond, and Pavilion Bridge. Don’t miss the elegant pavilions, which house permanent exhibits on traditional Chinese architecture. Visitors can also enjoy tea at the Song Cha Xie Teahouse, or a meal at the Chi Lin Vegetarian Restaurant.

Things to Know Before You Go

• Nan Lian Garden offers free admission, though special exhibitions may require a separate fee.

• Visitors should dress modestly.

• There is a suggested 1-way path around the garden.

• Group photos and the use of tripods are prohibited.

• Food and drinks (other than water) are not allowed inside the garden.

How to Get There

Nan Lian Garden is located in Diamond Hill. Take the MTR to Diamond Hill Station (exit C2). A number of buses also stop nearby, including bus Nos. 3B, 10, 11, 38, 61X, 62X, 74, 80, 89, 91, 92, 671, NR906, and E22, and minibus Nos. 19, 70, and 72.

When to Get There

Nan Lian Garden is open daily. Expect to spend around an hour here, or longer if you plan to have tea or a meal. Many visitors combine a visit to the garden with a visit to the Chi Lin Nunnery next door.

Chi Lin Nunnery

Nan Lian Garden is located across the street from Chi Lin Nunnery, which also manages the garden. The Buddhist temple was built in traditional Tang Dynasty architectural style; no nails were used in its construction. The temple includes several halls and courtyards, a pagoda, bell tower, library, and a school.
