Home to more than 400 animals and 200 plant species, the Naples Zoo (Lo Zoo di Napoli) is made up of a combination of vast animal enclosures and botanical displays. Explore pavilions full of hippopotamuses, rhinoceroses, and elephants; visit a variety of reptiles; and enjoy the birds in the zoo’s aviary.

The Basics

Originally designed by architect Luigi Piccinato and opened to the public in 1949, the Naples Zoo (which was restored in 2013) is both a place to learn about animals and a recognized center for animal conservation. Visit 96 species of animal and 203 varieties of plants, and learn about how the facility breeds a variety of species, including Arabian oryx, black rhinoceros, klipspringer (a small African antelope), and king vultures.

How to Get There

The zoo it is located less than 12 miles (20 kilometers) from Naples and can be reached by car: take the A56 to Via Claudio, then follow Viale John Fitzgerald Kennedy to Via A. Usodimare. You can also reach the Naples Zoo on public transportation by taking the Cumana railway to the Zoo/Edenlandia stop.

When to Get There

The zoo is open year-round with extended evening hours in the summer. Naples can be quite hot in the summer, so the zoo is most comfortable in spring or fall.

Visit Parco Virgiliano in Posillipo for panoramic views of the ocean and coastline as well as nature trails and a playground.
