POINT OF INTEREST

National Botanical Garden

Avenida República de Colombia, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, 10210

Spanning 494 acres (200 hectares), the Dr. Rafael María Moscoso Botanic Garden—or National Botanical Garden—is the largest botanical garden in the Caribbean. Named after the first Dominican botanist to catalog the island’s flora, the garden is home to nearly 70,000 different species of plants and flowers.

The basics

Visitors come to the National Botanical Garden to admire the many species of plants and flowers, enjoy a picnic, take part in a variety of educational programs, or even go for a run or walk, thanks to the miles of ornamental brick paths winding their way around the expansive park. A sightseeing tram goes around the park and makes it easy to visit different areas, including the popular Japanese Garden. Visit the garden independently, or as part of a guided tour that also visits other Santo Domingo highlights such as Los Tres Ojos National Park.

Things to know before you go

  • There’s a fee to access the botanical garden, with a different price for non-residents.
  • Free guided tours of the Herbarium are offered daily during the week.
  • Wear comfortable shoes to explore the expansive grounds.
  • Bring sun protection and insect repellant, as well as plenty of water.
  • There’s a gift shop and stand selling water, drinks, and snacks near the entrance.

How to get there

The National Botanical Garden is located in northwest Santo Domingo, on Avenida de Los Proceres. The easiest way to visit is by taxi or rideshare. Several buses also stop nearby while nearby metro stations include Estacion Maria Montez and Ulises Francisco Espaillat. Parking is available on-site.

When to get there

The park is open daily from 9am–5pm daily, with the exception of Christmas Day, Good Friday, and August 25, when the gardens are closed. Different flowers will be in bloom at different times of the year, but note that November to March generally offers the best weather for being outdoors. Regardless of which month you visit, try to stop by first thing in the morning to avoid crowds and the midday heat.

Birding at the garden

The National Botanical Garden is also a great location for birders. In fact, birdwatchers can enter the park several hours before the official opening time if they have their binoculars in tow. Common species sighted include the endemic Hispaniola parakeet and palmchat (the national bird of the Dominican Republic), along with migratory birds such as the American redstart, Cape May warbler, and black-and-white warbler.
