National Heroes Square

Bridgetown, Barbados

You'll find National Heroes Square right in the middle of all the action in Barbados' capital city, Bridgetown. Previously known as Trafalgar Square, this spot recognizes Bajan heroes and influential cultural figures, like Errol Walton Barrow, Barbados' first prime minister, and superstar/businesswoman Rihanna. Ceremonies are held here throughout the year, including Remembrance Day in November and National Heroes Day in April.

The basics

Many walking tours of Bridgetown include a stop at National Heroes Square, where you'll learn about the monuments there. This spot across from the Parliament Building has an obelisk honoring the Bajan citizens who served in World War I and World War II. There's also a dolphin fountain in the square, which commemorates the date when Bridgetown started receiving running water.

Things to know before you go

  • The plaza is open to the public and there is no cost to visit.

  • The area is wheelchair accessible, and there are a few benches there.

  • You'll often find taxis at the ready next to the square.

How to get there

National Heroes Square is a triangular space between Wharf Road and Broad Street at the Chamberlain Bridge. If you’re coming from the cruise port, it's just over 1 mile (under 2 kilometers) away, walking along the Princess Alice Highway. Cruise ships typically offer shuttles that drop off near the square.

When to get there

The square is always open to the public and you'll get some beautiful water views at sunrise and sunset. It doesn't typically get crowded here, except when a special ceremony is being held.

Things to do near National Heroes Square

The Broad Street shopping district is just a block from National Heroes Square. There you can purchase souvenirs, jewelry, and duty-free products like alcohol. If you walk across the Chamberlain Bridge and south towards the water, you'll find a number of beach clubs along Carlisle Bay, as well as vendors offering cruises and other water activities.
