POINT OF INTEREST

National Museum

Al. 3 Maja 1, Krakow, Poland, 30-062

Home to 780,000 objects, Krakow’s National Museum (often abbreviated to MNK) is one of Poland’s biggest museums. It features Polish art from the 20th century, plus military memorabilia and decorative arts from the Middle Ages to the Art Nouveau period.

The basics

If you’re spending multiple days in Krakow, visit the National Museum with a museum pass. These handy multi-day passes help you beat the ticket lines and grant you access to 30-40 museums and attractions—and sometimes include transport. If multiple museums aren’t on the agenda, you can visit the National Museum independently. Either make your own way there or look out for it as a stop on some hop-on hop-off sightseeing tours.

Things to know before you go

  • The museum is accessible to wheelchair users.

  • If you want to continue your adventures after the National Museum, this is only one segment of the museum—there are 11 different branches around the city.

  • Be sure to check the schedule before booking your ticket as the museum offers free entry days—usually on Tuesdays.

How to get there

It’s easy to get to the museum by either tram or bus. If traveling by tram, the Muzeum Nardowe stop is right outside (you can get tram line 15 or 18). Buses also stop outside at the Muzeum Narodowe stop (multiple buses go to this stop, including 103, 114, 144, 152, 173, 164, 179, 192, and 194).

When to get there

The museum is typically open year-round and throughout the week, apart from on Mondays. Opening times are usually from mid-morning until the early evening, but hours are usually shorter on Sundays, with a mid-afternoon closing time. Before visiting, it’s always advisable to check the latest opening hours. To beat the crowds, avoid weekends and early afternoon visits.

Why to visit the National Museum in Krakow

Since its inception in 1879, the National Museum in Krakow has proudly stood as Poland's first national museum. This is especially impressive considering the country's history of division under Austrian, Prussian, and Russian rule. A powerful symbol of Polish identity, the museum's origins can be traced back to the generous donation of artist Henryk Siemiradzki's masterpiece Nero's Torches. This pivotal contribution sparked a wave of artistic donations, solidifying the museum's role in celebrating Poland's heritage.
