National Science Centre
Bhairon Marg, near Gate No.4, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, 110001
Delhi’s National Science Centre, indirectly run by the Government of India’s Ministry of Culture, is one of the largest science-themed complexes in India. It’s a fun place to visit, especially with kids, thanks to the many exhibits and shows in its numerous galleries. From Indian heritage to model dinosaurs to nuclear power, there’s something for everyone.
The basics
There’s a lot to explore within the National Science Center’s seven permanent galleries, including live science demos, 3D and holographic shows, simulators, and interactive exhibits. Many areas showcase India’s role in scientific discovery and history, so even the most science-savvy international visitors are likely to learn something new.
Most people visit the center independently. You can include a visit on a customizable private tour of Delhi, but this might not allow sufficient time to explore at your own pace. As the center is quite close to India Gate, it makes sense to visit before or after checking out this must-see attraction.
Things to know before you go
Various ticket types are available depending on which exhibits and attractions you want to visit, and whether you want to see a film. Plan to spend at least half a day, preferably longer, if you’re traveling with kids. There are some tactile exhibits especially designed for visually impaired visitors, and the 5-floor building is wheelchair accessible. Entry is free for visually impaired and disabled visitors.
How to get there
The center is in New Delhi, east of India Gate and not far from the Purana Qila and National Zoological Park. The nearest metro stations are Supreme Court and Indraprastha on the Blue Line, although they’re a bit too far to walk across busy roads, so you’ll need to catch an auto rickshaw from the station.
When to get there
The center is open daily, except during the festivals of Holi (March) and Diwali (November), from mid morning until early evening. The last tickets are sold 45 minutes before closing time. The center tends to be busiest at the weekends, although it’s also a popular place with school groups during the week.
Other fun museums in Delhi
Although many people travel to Delhi to check out the centuries-old historic monuments, sometimes you need to retreat from the heat or the rain inside a good museum. As well as the National Science Centre, you can also check out the excellent National Museum, the family-friendly National Rail Museum and Shankar’s International Doll Museum, and the downright quirky Sulabh International Museum of Toilets.
