Nauticus

Located along the waterfront in downtown Norfolk, Nauticus is a maritime discovery center offering hands-on experiences. Through a museum with interactive exhibits, the Battleship Wisconsin, a sailing center, and the Schooner Virginia (a reproduction of a century-old vessel), visitors can learn all about sailing and the environment, technology, the military, and other subjects.
The basics
Visitors can explore a variety of interactive exhibits, as well as STEM to STERN educational programs and historical interpretations, at the museum, which is also home to an aquarium. Explore the outdoor decks of the Battleship Wisconsin on self-guided tours or opt for a guided tour. Learn about the art and science of sailing through programs at the sailing center, and take part in field trips, outings, and volunteer opportunities on the Schooner Virginia.
Things to know before you go
- There is an entrance fee for Nauticus, with discounts for children (3-12), active military, and Snap EBT/Medicaid card holders. Virginia and North Carolina licensed teachers receive free admission.
- Guided tours of the Battleship Wisconsin require a separate fee in addition to the entrance fee to the center. Overnight stays are also possible.
- A café and gift shop are on-site.
- Areas of Nauticus are wheelchair accessible, including the museum building and the main deck of the Battleship Wisconsin. Handicap reserved parking and seats in the theater are also available, and the ship access experience room offers a virtual tour of the ship.
How to get there
Nauticus is set along the waterfront in downtown Norfolk. Take I-64 to 264 West, and exit at Waterside Drive. Metered street parking is available, along with paid parking garages on Main Street and Plume Street. The MacArthur Square Station is the closest train station to Nauticus, and several bus stops are also nearby.
When to get there
Nauticus is open Tuesday to Saturday, following general business hours, and for shorter hours on Sundays. Check the website for the schedule of tours of the Battleship Wisconsin, to reserve tickets, and to book experiences with the sailing center.
Hampton Roads Naval Museum
On the second floor of Nauticus, the Hampton Roads Naval Museum traces more than 240 years of naval history in Hampton Roads, Virginia. In addition to a collection of uniforms, weapons, underwater artifacts, ship models, and naval artwork, the museum also has a detailed exhibit on the role of the Navy during the Vietnam War, and includes educational resources and a library for researchers. Admission to the museum is free.
