Negombo Lagoon
Negombo, Sri Lanka
Western Sri Lanka is famed for its river-fed lagoons, and Negombo is home to one of the country’s most picturesque wetlands. The area not only supports a wide range of land and marine biodiversity, but Negombo Lagoon is popular with local Sri Lankan fishermen, who still use traditional fishing boats and nets. Prawns, crabs, and fish are caught daily and grilled and boiled in local restaurants.
The basics
Negombo Lagoon is one of the city’s most popular attractions and a frequent stop on city tours and even multiday Sri Lanka package trips. Unsurprisingly, the best way to experience this unique water system is by boat. Lagoon cruises tend to last around 90 minutes to two hours and include up-close views of local fishermen at work. Guides are typically on hand to narrate the ride and explain the flora and fauna observed. Many tours begin at Hamilton Canal, an urban waterway that was originally constructed by the Dutch.
Things to know before you go
If you’re participating in a boat tour, be sure to inquire if binoculars will be provided. Travelers can spot monkeys in the treetops, migratory birds, and even crocodiles poking out from the lagoon.
Some tours also include a stop at Negombo Lagoon’s islands, which can be visited on foot, or a snack of fresh fruit or King Coconut water. You’ll probably want to also pack your own refreshments, especially drinking water.
Wear sunscreen and bring sun protection, as the sun can be scorching. Consider a morning or late-afternoon boat ride to avoid the midday sun’s strongest rays.
Bring your camera—a good zoom lens is recommended. There’s a lot of fishing activity both along the water and the shore, where fishermen often dry their catch in the sun.
How to get there
Negombo Lagoon is located to the south of Negombo city, about 35 minutes by taxi or private car. It’s also about a 30-minute ride from the Bandaranaike International Airport—close enough that the lagoon can even be visited during long layovers. From Colombo, count on a 50-minute drive to Negombo. Guided excursions typically provide hotel or airport transfers.
When to get there
Winter (December through early March) tends to be the most popular window for visiting Sri Lanka, when the weather is dry and daytime temperatures are sunnier. June through October brings monsoon rains to the western and southern parts of the country—avoid planning a visit during that time, as travel disruptions can occur.
The best seafood dishes are at Negombo Beach
From deluxe fine dining restaurants to rustic beach shacks, there are a range of options in Negombo for sampling a Sri Lankan catch of the day. Specialties include grilled prawns, prawn or crab curries with rice, grilled calamari, and local fish such as Spanish mackerel. Head to Negombo Beach to enjoy the city’s ocean-facing seafood joints. Come with friends or family—you can usually expect generous portions.
