New Town Eco Park
Kolkata, West Bengal
In one of India’s largest cities, it’s hard to find natural places to escape the honk of traffic and press of humanity, but at Kolkata’s New Town Eco Park you can do just that. This 480-acre (194-hectare) urban park has cycling and walking trails, a lake for kayaking and boating, themed zones, and many other activities and facilities.
The basics
The Eco Park was opened in 2012 to provide a natural recreation space in urban Kolkata. The many activities and themed zones provide a fun, family-friendly day out. Stroll through gardens, rent a tandem bicycle, or partake in adda (conversation), a quintessential Bengali activity, in the Adda Zone. If you won’t have the opportunity to visit the Taj Mahal in Agra, see a smaller replica in the Seven Wonders themed area.
Most people visit the New Town Eco Park independently. It’s quite near the airport, so it’s a handy destination if you’re looking for something to do before a late flight. Alternatively, combine a visit with the nearby Science City Kolkata.
Things to know before you go
- There are several cafés and eateries in the park, serving local Bengali dishes, sweets, and traditional Indian snacks.
- Accommodation is available in modern cottages on Eco Island—a small island in the middle of the park’s lake—accessible via a bridge.
- There’s a small entry fee for the park, while individual activities and zones have their own prices.
How to get there
The New Town Eco Park is located in the New Town suburb of Kolkata, east of the central city. While it is accessible by local bus, these can be slow and uncomfortable, so taking a taxi or arranging a private driver can be preferable.
When to get there
The park is open every day except Monday between March and October, which is the hot, wet season in Kolkata. It’s open from around midday until late in the evening, with tickets available up to an hour before closing time. Note that opening hours can vary between the park’s attractions.
Visit Science City Kolkata
Science City Kolkata is around a 30-minute drive from New Town Eco Park, directly down the Biswa Bangla Sarani highway. This family-friendly destination features exhibits about the earth, ecosystems, and space.
