Overlooking Nairobi and Nairobi National Park, the Ngong Hills are a ridge of peaks that are popular among hikers and lovers of the great outdoors. The area is an excellent place to go for a hike without having to stray too far from the city.
The basics
Plenty of people come to this area for hiking, birdwatching, and family picnics, and dedicated souls can brave the 10.5-mile (17-kilometer) Ngong Hills hike for some of the best views of the Great Rift Valley imaginable. Tours to the hills from Nairobi usually offer the opportunity to do a bit of hiking, and some also include zipline adventures or visits to area tea plantations.

The Ngong Hills are a must for hikers and birders.
Photographers should pack a zoom lens to get great shots of local wildlife.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring sunscreen and water (if it’s not included in your tour package).
How to get there
The Ngong Hills are about a 1-hour drive southwest of Nairobi via Ngong Road. The area isn't easy to get to using public transportation, and not all taxi drivers will be willing to take you there and back. Your best bet is to join a tour that includes hotel pickup and guide services.
When to get there
The best time to visit the Ngong Hills is from June to October, when the weather is at its driest. Avoid the rainy seasons of March–May and November–December if you plan to do any hiking. No matter what time of year you visit the hills, it’s smart to come early to avoid crowds and the heat of the day.

If you're really into hiking and are looking for a challenge, consider a trip to Mt. Kenya, located within Mount Kenya National Park. There are three main peaks here that draw in climbers, the easiest of which is Point Lenana. Just make sure to arrange a guide ahead of your visit.
