Niederdorf
Zurich, Switzerland, 8001
Lively bars, fondue restaurants, and souvenir kiosks converge in Zurich’s Niederdorf, a medieval district of cobbled streets that’s part of Zurich’s old town. Busy from morning to late at night, the area attracts a mix of architecture enthusiasts, shoppers, and partygoers, along with a stream of people-watchers who come to see them all in action.
The basics
Zurich’s old town is split into two areas: Oberdorf is on the west bank of the River Limmat, while Niederdorf sits on the east bank. The neighborhood is easy to reach via public transit, making it a handy meet-up and finish point for many Zurich walking tours.
Niederdorf’s big historic attraction is the Grossmünster, where travelers climb up the Karlsturm or gaze at the stained-glass windows. Tours by foot, bike, and even electronic tuk-tuk often stop here for photos, giving a nod to the church’s history in the commentary.
Things to know before you go
Niederdorf is mostly made up of pedestrian streets.
The district is largely manageable with a stroller or wheelchair, but be aware that some streets, like Niederdorfstrasse, are cobbled.
It’s easy to stay hydrated here, with drinking water fountains dotted around the neighborhood.
There are plenty of cafés, restaurants, and bars in Niederdorf, though these tend to be more expensive than in other Zurich locations.
How to get there
Part of Zurich old town, Niederdorf is easy to find, sitting on the east side of the Limmat River and stretching loosely between Central and Bellevue. You can take the tram to Central, which is where the district’s main Niederdorfstrasse starts. As another option, Zurich Hauptbahnhof is only a short walk away.
When to get there
As with the rest of Zurich old town, the busiest time in Niederdorf is the summer, when the bars are full and sightseers join the usual mix of locals and shoppers. At the end of August, the annual Dörflifäscht takes place, featuring live music, street food, and events around Niederdorf.
Zurich Grossmünster
The standout sight in the south part of Niederdorf is the Grossmünster, and a climb up the Karlsturm (its most impressive tower) is a must while you’re in the city. Tickets are inexpensive, and you can usually head straight up the steps without waiting in line. After climbing 187 steps, the panoramic city views are a worthwhile reward.
