Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden

Corner of 9th Ave. South & Mayor Magrath Dr South, Lethbridge, AB, AB T1K 0C6

The Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden is a tranquil piece of Japanese culture set in the Canadian city of Lethbridge. A unique treasure in Southern Alberta, the garden is an oasis where you can take part in cultural events, yoga, and tea ceremonies among flower gardens, lakes, and water features.

The Basics

Visit the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden and explore the grounds at your own pace or join one of the daily tours for a deeper look at the history and environment of the gardens. You can book a package deal that includes traditional Japanese drinks and snacks, try on traditional Japanese robes (yukata), watch a sumo match, or engage in activities like floating lanterns on the water. Traditionally-dressed hosts, music, and dance performances complete the experience.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The gardens are a must-see for Japanese-culture enthusiasts and nature lovers.

  • There are gifts, food, and drinks available in the visitor center at the park entrance.

  • Cultural events like sumo wrestling are scheduled throughout the week, and seasonal activities take place throughout the year. Check the online event calendar to time your visit to these events.

  • The garden paths are wheelchair and stroller accessible but the pavilion is not.

How to Get There

The gardens are located just off Alberta Provincial Highway No. 5, in Henderson Lake Park. The park is easily accessible when traveling through Alberta or visiting Lethbridge: From downtown Lethbridge, take 3rd Avenue South to Highway 5 and then turn left on 9th Avenue South. The Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden will be between you and the lake.

When to Get There

The park is open from May through October, and guided tours are offered throughout the day. Visit in June to see the most impressive flower blooms or during the winter holidays to catch the garden’s light display.

The Lethbridge High Level Bridge

While in Lethbridge, don’t miss the chance to check out the Lethbridge Viaduct—more commonly known as the High Level Bridge. Spanning the Old Man River, the bridge is the longest and tallest railway trestle bridge in the world. It is also surrounded by the Helen Schuler Nature Reserve, making it a nice spot for an evening stroll.
