Old Biscuit Mill
375 Albert Road, Woodstock, Cape Town, Western Cape, 7915
A converted biscuit factory, the Old Biscuit Mill is now a cutting-edge shopping, dining, and arts hub in Cape Town’s Woodstock suburb, adorned with street art from local and international artists. A wide range of boutiques and stores, plus the Neighbourgoods Market on the weekends, makes it a cool destination for both shopping and events.
The basics
The original structure, built in the early 1900s, operated as a mill until 1946, and the Old Biscuit Mill’s revival played a major part in renewing Woodstock. Many creative businesses have workshops or studios here, and you can buy jewelry, clothing, ceramics, and more. Food and drink options run from coffee or dumplings to craft beers and award-winning dining, along with the wealth of local items on offer at Neighbourgoods Market. Many travelers visit independently, but joining a street-art or market tour will let you put the Old Biscuit Mill into context.
Things to know before you go
The Old Biscuit Mill is a great choice for shoppers, foodies, and anyone with an interest in the new South Africa.
Allow a couple of hours to explore the shops and the market, and half a day if you’d like to eat there too.
The Old Biscuit Mill has accessible bathrooms, but most wheelchair users will find the market too crowded to easily get around; it’s better to visit on a Friday.
How to get there
The Old Biscuit Mill sits in Cape Town’s south-central Woodstock suburb, about a 3-mile (4.5-kilometer) drive from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. From Cape Town Station, you can catch the #261 bus at the Adderley bus stop right to the door. There’s free parking on-site during the week, but on the weekends the market takes over the lot, so Uber is a better option than driving yourself on Saturdays.
When to get there
The Old Biscuit Mill is open Sunday–Friday from morning to late afternoon, and Saturday from morning to mid-afternoon, though some restaurants keep different hours, and some shops close on Sundays and public holidays. The Neighbourgoods Market runs Saturdays and Sundays; Saturday mornings are the best time to visit, with the Neighbourgoods Market and the mill itself in full swing.
The Neighbourgoods Market
Since 2006, the Old Biscuit Mill has hosted the Neighbourgoods Market on the weekends, with over 100 traders offering produce, baked goods, charcuterie, sausages, cheese, chocolate, and more local eats, plus arts, crafts, and design, including fashion and homewares. It’s one of Cape Town’s top neighborhood markets, with DJs adding to the dynamic atmosphere.
