Old Mill
Melville Place, South Perth, Perth, Western Australia, 6151
One of Perth’s oldest colonial landmarks, the Old Mill dates back to 1835 and operated as a flour mill until 1859. It has gone through many other lives since then, from a wine saloon to a hotel to a poultry farm, and is today a National Trust landmark.
The basics
The whitewashed stone mill and cottage sit in the suburb of South Perth, near the Perth Zoo and just across the river from Perth’s Central Business District (CBD), making the Old Mill accessible for visitors during a day of sightseeing in the city center. The mill is not usually part of city tour itineraries, but guided tours are available on-site for those who visit on their own and wish to learn more about Perth’s early colonial days and European settlement in Western Australia.
Things to know before you go
- The Old Mill is ideal for history buffs interested in colonial artifacts.

If you’re coming from Perth CBD, board the ferry at the Barrack Street Jetty, cross the Swan River to the Mends Street Jetty, then walk about 15 minutes to reach the mill. Alternatively, you can walk the whole way via the Narrows Bridge in about 30 minutes.
When to get there
The mill is open late morning to late afternoon Tuesday–Friday, and in the afternoon only on the weekends; it’s closed on Mondays and public holidays.
