Old Orhei Archaeological Complex (Orheiul Vechi)

The Old Orhei Archaeological Complex (Orheiul Vechi) is one of Moldova’s most impressive attractions. It consists of ancient archeological sites, monasteries, and monastic complexes in caves and hewn into the cliffs, medieval sites, museums, outdoor trails, and beautiful views of the Răut River gorge. There's much to explore, whether you’re interested in nature or culture.
The basics
There are many layers of history, culture, and geology to check out at Old Orhei. The main attractions are the cave monastery and orthodox church, the ruins of a medieval mosque and citadel, and the Museum of Archeology and Anthropology and the Ethnography Museum, both in Butuceni village. UNESCO has placed the Old Orhei Archaeological Complex on its “tentative” list of world heritage sites to recognize its cultural significance.
Many travelers visit the complex on a day trip from the capital, Chişinău, either on a guided tour or independently. Tours often include visits to nearby wine cellars. Travelers can walk the trails or arrange other guided active adventures such as kayaking, rock climbing, cycling, and hiking.
Things to know before you go
Old Orhei is ticketed, but the cost is minimal. Guided tours, available in several languages, cost extra.
Visitors can follow many walking, hiking, and cycling routes around the site. Detailed maps are available on the Old Orhei website, and markings show the routes to follow.
This is a protected site, so don’t touch the structures or artifacts, and don’t take anything away with you.
How to get there
Old Orhei is about 34 miles (55 kilometers) northeast of Chişinău. Many people visit on guided tours, but if you’re self-driving, there’s cheap parking at the site. To take public transport from the capital, catch a minibus to Butuceni or Trebujeni, which typically runs in either direction three or four times a day.
When to get there
The reserve is accessible 24/7. For the best and safest experience, visit during daylight hours. The two museums in Butuceni are only open Monday through Friday, from morning until early evening. The most pleasant time to visit Moldova, in general, is the spring or fall when the weather is comfortable.
Birdwatching at Old Orhei
About 100 species of birds live around Old Orhei and the river gorges, so keen bird watchers are in luck. Marked birdwatching routes lead you through forests, meadows, villages, and farmland for the best views of birds in their natural habitats. Bring binoculars and look out for rare orioles, blue seagulls, and large egrets, among other species.
