The basics

The Monte Carlo Opera was commissioned by Prince Charles III (1818-1889) as a way to offer more cultural activities in Monaco. It is known locally as the Salle Garnier after its architect Charles Garnier (the man also responsible for the Paris Opera House, or Palais Garnier). Not only does the Monte Carlo Opera celebrate the great operatic tradition with works by composers like Verdi and Puccini, but throughout the year it also welcomes musicians and performers from a wide range of repertoires, including classical, jazz, and dance. The Opéra has also been used to host gala dinners and events, including the reception in 2011 for the royal wedding of Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene.

Things to know before you go

• Visitors can tour the building during the day as long as no rehearsals or performances are taking place.
• To see a performance, visit the box office where staff can advise on ticket prices and availability.
• Some performances require a special dress code - check before you visit.
• Each autumn, the world’s finest jazz musicians come together at the venue for the Monte Carlo Jazz Festival.

How to get there

The Monte Carlo Opera is located on the edge of the Place du Casino, or casino square. It is a frequent stop on guided tours and also easy to reach on foot. If traveling by bus, take number 1, 2 or 3 to the casino/opera. There is also underground car parking available.

When to get there

If attending a performance, ticket prices will depend on the production and seating available. See the official website or check with the box office when you arrive. For daytime tours of the building, checking availability with the box office is also advised to avoid disappointment.

Visit Monaco Cathedral

Close to many of Monaco’s other top sights, Monaco Cathedral is a worthwhile stop on any visit to the city. The white marble building was finished in 1875, and is built on the site of different chapels that date back to the 13th century. Inside you’ll find an altarpiece by Louis Bréa painted in 1500 and a very well renowned 20th-century organ. Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III here in 1965.
